Titles

License types

The noun on the wall license is not the same in every state. Texas issues a sales agent. Florida issues a sales associate. Illinois’s first license is already a broker. North Carolina’s first license is a provisional broker. REALTOR® is not a license type.

Salesperson

The entry license in California, New York, Georgia, and Pennsylvania. Practice requires affiliation with a broker except where a state issues an unemployed or inactive credential.

Sales Agent

Texas TREC title for the entry license. Inactive until a sponsoring broker is in place.

Sales Associate

Florida FREC title for the entry license. The 45-hour post-license course is not optional.

Provisional Broker

North Carolina’s entry credential. NCREC does not issue a salesperson license.

Broker

Independent or supervising practice in most of these states. In Illinois the first license is already called broker.

Managing Broker

Illinois supervising credential above broker. The person who can sponsor other brokers.
