What to know first

Kansas will not let Pearson seat you until the Kansas Real Estate Commission issues a PL number. That pre-license number is the tell. You create a Citizen Access account, apply for Salesperson Pre-Licensure, and wait for the confirmation email containing the PL number. Live KREC FAQ (fetched 2026-09-02): salesperson applicants pay a total of $210 to the Commission — $15 application fee, $70 background fee, and $125 license fee. Pearson digital fingerprints at Overland Park, Topeka, and Wichita are a separate $16 to Pearson (live Fingerprinting page). Schools cannot report your hours without it. Original education is two named 30-hour courses: Principles of Real Estate and the Kansas Practice Course. It is not Missouri's 48-hour pre-exam plus 24-hour MREP, not Nebraska's 96 hours as of 2026, and not Colorado's 168 named broker hours. Exam authorization is sent only after the 30-hour Principles course posts.

Pearson VUE's April 2025 Kansas handbook (#091700, rev 7/25) is the exam bible. $70 per paper, or $70 combo when both are scheduled on the same day the way the handbook describes. General 2.5 hours; Kansas 1.5 hours. Passing is scaled 70 on each paper (numeric scores only to failures). National/general (effective April 24, 2025) is 80 scored items plus 5 pretest. Fail one, retake only that paper after 24 hours, but KREC must receive the complete license application within six months of the earlier pass date or both papers die.

The 30-hour Kansas Practice Course is a different clock: it must be completed within the six months immediately preceding KREC's receipt of the license application. Principles must be within one year immediately prior to passing both papers. Criminal-history reports are valid six months from issue; Pearson digital fingerprints at Overland Park, Topeka, and Wichita are $16 and valid 365 days. Original licenses cannot be issued inactive — you affiliate with a supervising or branch broker who certifies honesty, trustworthiness, and good reputation. Out-of-state licensees skip Principles, sit only the Kansas paper, and still take the 30-hour Practice Course. Military-spouse and established-resident waiver paths under K.S.A. 48-3406 and 2025 HB 2280 are KREC products, not a generic reciprocity chart.
