What to know first
Managing broker is how an Indiana broker becomes the person other brokers practice under. It is not a salesperson upgrade because Indiana has no salesperson license. PLA's Managing Broker Eligibility Information is explicit: hold an active broker license for at least 3 years in the State of Indiana; complete a 24-hour managing broker course; and take and pass an examination through Pearson VUE — "This is the Broker Exam." The handbook table agrees: Real Estate Managing Broker, series ReIN-Broker, 240 minutes, 145 questions, scaled 75, $55. It is the same paper entry brokers sat, not a second series code, and it is not "course only."
Apply in MyLicense One: link the current Indiana broker license, select the Managing Broker Eligibility action item, upload the 24-hour certificate, update Education History, then — after PLA provides registration information — sit Pearson. Once you pass, upload the exam pass sheet using Upload Additional Documentation. Illinois's managing broker is a different IDFPR object (45 hours, age 20, two of the last three years, PSI). Ohio's broker is a 120-hour, 20-transaction, scaled-75 PSI paper. Do not import those files. A managing broker who functions as one for any period of a CE year must take 4 of the 12 CE hours as managing-broker CE (876 IAC 7-5-2).
Your path to the license
Follow these steps in order. Deadlines and affiliation requirements can make a passed exam unusable if they are missed.
-
Hold an active Indiana broker license for three years
Entry was the 90-hour Pearson path. Confirm live counting rules with PLA. Unassigned/inactive years may not count the way you hope.
-
Complete the 24-hour managing-broker course
Commission-approved. Upload the certificate on the Managing Broker Eligibility action item. Not the 30-hour postlicensing and not the 4-hour CE slice.
-
Sit Pearson ReIN-Broker ($55) and upload the pass sheet
PLA: this is the broker exam. 145 questions, 240 minutes, scaled 75. Then the designation can attach. IdentoGO if new prints are required.
Education and eligibility
- Minimum age
- 18 years old
- Identification
- A Social Security number is required. An ITIN is not confirmed as a substitute.
- Residency and identification
- At least three years of active Indiana broker licensure (PLA Managing Broker Eligibility Information). Confirm any out-of-state years in writing with PLA before paying for the 24-hour course; the live sentence is "in the State of Indiana."
- Qualifying education
- PLA: complete a 24-hour managing broker course, upload the certificate, ensure Education History is updated. This sits on top of the 90-hour entry broker course already completed. Confirm live hour counts on the PLA managing-broker page before paying a school that quotes a different number. The 24 is not the 30-hour postlicensing (that was due in the first two years of the broker license) and not the 4-hour annual managing-broker CE slice.
- Character review
- Same Commission character review as entry brokers. Positive-response documentation if any criminal-history / discipline question is yes.
- Background process
- IdentoGO after application if new prints are required. Pre-application prints still do not count.
- Experience
- At least 3 years of active broker licensure in the State of Indiana (PLA). Confirm live counting rules (full-time vs. licensed-time, unassigned vs. active) with PLA before treating inactive years as qualifying.
- Broker affiliation
- A managing broker may qualify a broker company ($50 original) and hold associated brokers. Firm licensure is a separate PLA object: articles of incorporation/existence plus a designated managing broker who holds Managing Broker Eligibility. Notify PLA of any managing-broker change at pla5@pla.in.gov. Branch offices designate an associated broker or the managing broker as branch manager; no branch fee on the live table.
Documents to prepare
- Active Indiana broker license currently linked on the MyLicense One dashboard
- 24-hour managing-broker course completion uploaded
- Evidence of 3 years of Indiana broker licensure
- Pearson ReIN-Broker passing score report (145 Q / scaled 75) uploaded after the sitting
- PLA Managing Broker Eligibility action item
The licensing exam
Same ReIN-Broker sitting as entry: 145 questions, 240 minutes, scaled 75, $55. National 80 scored + 5 pretest; Indiana state 50 scored + 5–10 pretest. Handbook #091500. PLA: "This is the Broker Exam." Do not look for a ReIN-Mgr series the current bulletin does not print. The 24-hour managing-broker course is education, not an exam part. If you already passed ReIN-Broker years ago as an entry broker, PLA still sends you back to Pearson for this designation — confirm the live action-item email rather than assuming a lifetime pass letter covers the upgrade.
Pearson VUE, same ReIN-Broker series as entry (handbook #091500). PLA: "This is the Broker Exam." · Fee: $55
| Part | Questions | Minutes | Pass |
|---|---|---|---|
| Broker National/General (ReIN-Broker) | 80 | 150 | 80 scored + 5 pretest; combined 145 questions / 240 minutes / $55 / scaled 75 |
| Broker Indiana State (ReIN-Broker) | 50 | 90 | 50 scored + 5–10 pretest; combined sitting 240 minutes. Same paper as entry brokers |
Same $55 ReIN-Broker sitting as entry. PLA emails Pearson registration information after the Managing Broker Eligibility application. Upload the pass sheet when you have it. Do not invent a second series. If PLA later publishes a different bulletin, read that bulletin; until then the table is ReIN-Broker 145 / 240 / 75 / $55.

Application costs
These are commission or testing-vendor amounts we can cite. School tuition and optional preparation products are private-market prices.
| Fee | Amount |
|---|---|
| Examination | $55 |
| Renewal (every 3 years) | $60 |
Pearson $55 is the ReIN-Broker sitting PLA requires for this designation. Broker license renewal remains $60 every three years. Company original $50. Confirm any separate managing-broker eligibility fee on the live MyLicense One cart — the published PLA table prices Broker / Broker Company / Instructor, not a third "managing broker license" dollar, because this is eligibility on an existing broker license.
| Commission | Indiana Professional Licensing Agency — Indiana Real Estate Commission (317) 234-3009 IC 25-34.1 (especially 25-34.1-3-4.1 qualifications); 876 IAC 5 (fees), 876 IAC 7-4 (30-hour postlicensing), 876 IAC 7-5 (12-hour CE year) |
|---|---|
| Pre-licensing | 24-hour Commission-approved managing-broker course (plus 3 years of licensure and the Pearson broker exam) PLA: complete a 24-hour managing broker course, upload the certificate, ensure Education History is updated. |
| Sponsoring broker | A managing broker may qualify a broker company ($50 original) and hold associated brokers. |
| Fingerprints | IdentoGO as PLA currently requires on the managing-broker application. Same rule: a CBC dated before the application date is invalid. If PLA does not demand new prints on a current broker, do not invent a second $38.20 — wait for the action-item instructions. |
| CE / renewal | Same 12-hour CE year as brokers, except 876 IAC 7-5-2: at least 4 of the 12 must be dedicated to the business, management, and legal knowledge needed by a managing broker, in any CE year the broker functions as a managing broker for any period of time. Instructor permits, if held, add a 4-hour instructor slice that also counts toward the 12. |
| Recovery fund | Same Commission recovery / education-fund rules as entry brokers. Confirm live PLA assessment. Not E&O. |
Mistakes that delay applicants
-
Skipping Pearson because a blog said "course only"
PLA's own managing-broker page: take and pass an examination through Pearson VUE. This is the Broker Exam. Handbook table: ReIN-Broker 145 / $55.
-
Importing an Illinois managing-broker certificate
Different regulator, different hour count, different vendor, different base-license history rule.
-
Fingerprinting before the managing-broker application
Same invalid-if-dated-before-application rule as entry. Wait for PLA.
-
Counting the 24-hour course as the 4-hour annual managing-broker CE
876 IAC 7-5-2 is a per-CE-year slice after you function as a managing broker. The 24 is original eligibility education.
-
Treating unassigned or inactive years as the three-year clock
PLA says hold an active broker license for at least 3 years in Indiana. Confirm counting rules in writing before you pay for the 24.
Reciprocity and recognition
| Partner / path | Accepted exam | Conditions |
|---|---|---|
| No formal bilateral reciprocity is published for this credential. | ||
PLA endorsement, if any, is published by the Commission. An Illinois managing-broker certificate is not an Indiana managing-broker designation. Out-of-state brokers typically endorse into the Indiana broker license (state portion) first, then later meet the three-year-in-Indiana plus 24-hour path unless PLA writes otherwise for your file.
Renewal and staying active
Same 12-hour CE year as brokers, except 876 IAC 7-5-2: at least 4 of the 12 must be dedicated to the business, management, and legal knowledge needed by a managing broker, in any CE year the broker functions as a managing broker for any period of time. Instructor permits, if held, add a 4-hour instructor slice that also counts toward the 12.
This is eligibility on the broker license, not a second three-year wall hanging. Broker renewal remains $60. Company renewal $50.

How Indiana is different
Illinois managing broker: IDFPR, 45 hours, PSI, two of last three years. Ohio broker: 120 hours, 20 counted transactions, scaled 75, PSI. Kentucky: principal broker on a salesperson base. Indiana: 24-hour course plus three years on a broker-only scheme, same Pearson ReIN-Broker 145 / $55 as entry, 4-hour managing-broker CE slice each CE year you function as one.
Frequently asked questions
- Does Indiana issue a salesperson license?
- No. Entry is broker. This page is managing-broker eligibility, a later designation on that broker license.
- Is there a second Pearson exam?
- PLA and handbook #091500 both point at ReIN-Broker — 145 questions, 240 minutes, $55, scaled 75 — plus a 24-hour course and three years. It is the broker exam again, not a new series, and not "course only."
- Is this Illinois managing broker?
- No. Illinois sits on a broker-entry base at IDFPR with PSI and a 45-hour course. Indiana is broker-only with Pearson at entry and again for this designation, 24 hours, three years in Indiana.
- What CE applies once I am a managing broker?
- Still 12 hours per July 1–June 30 CE year, but 4 of those 12 must be managing-broker CE in any CE year you function as a managing broker for any period of time (876 IAC 7-5-2). The 24-hour pre-designation course is not that 4-hour slice.
- Do I need a company license?
- To hold other brokers you need a broker company ($50 original) with a designated managing broker who holds this eligibility. A sole-proprietor managing broker is a different hang. Branch offices have no application fee on the live table.
