Maine does not issue a salesperson license. The entry license is sales agent (§ 13200): a two-year, non-renewable entry-level license, held through a licensed agency under a designated broker. Associate broker (§ 13199) is the first renewable license. Designated broker requires a further 55-hour course after two years of associate-broker experience within five.

Prelicense education is a 55-hour Sales Agent Course with a 75% course pass, three quizzes (minimum 60 questions total) plus an 80-question final, and 90% attendance for live courses. The outline percentages come from the Commission's 2013/2014 QE PDF (product knowledge 28%, contracts 14%, Commission 13%, agency 13%). Pearson then gives 80 national items in 2.5 hours and 40 Maine-law items in 1.5 hours at a scaled 75, for $88. You must pass both parts within one year of the course-completion date on the original certificate, which you bring to the center. Apply within one year of passing the entire exam, but not the same day; scores must transmit overnight. The original license costs $100 for the application/license plus $21 for the criminal-records check. The $85 Maine Law exam (50 scored items, 1.5 hours) is a different exam used for reciprocity and for associate-broker / broker reinstatement; it does not satisfy the sales-agent law portion.

The sales agent license cannot be renewed. To upgrade to associate broker, you need two years of active affiliation, a 60-hour course at 75%, a Documented Field Experience Form, and a core course, filed no more than 30 days before the sales-agent license expires and within five years of original issuance. Associate brokers and brokers need 21 hours of CE every two years, including the current core; renewal is $100, with a $50 late fee within 90 days, and after 90 days you must pass the Maine Law exam and file a new application. New Hampshire’s renewable 40-hour license, Vermont’s separate PSI and OPR exams, and Massachusetts’s 40-hour salesperson course are useful comparisons, but Maine's requirements are its own.
