Can You Get a Real Estate License Online?

You can complete much of a real estate license from a laptop in many states, but “online license” is marketing shorthand. Education, the school’s final exam, the state exam, the application, fingerprints, and broker activation are separate gates. A state may permit online education and still require an in-person licensing exam or a physical fingerprint appointment.

Online education is state-specific

The first question is not whether a school has a polished website. It is whether the regulator approves the exact course and delivery method for your license type. California DRE’s statutory-course search distinguishes resident and correspondence offerings and approves courses individually. Texas tells sales-agent applicants to choose a qualifying-education provider through TREC. New York publishes approved qualifying schools for its 77-hour salesperson curriculum through the Department of State. Florida allows approved pre-license courses in classroom and distance-education environments. Illinois and North Carolina maintain their own approved-provider and course records.

Approval does not travel. A 75-hour online package approved in Georgia is not automatically Pennsylvania credit because both happen to use 75 hours. A generic “national” course does not replace Texas’s six named 30-hour courses or California’s Principles, Practice, and elective structure.

Self-paced and livestream are not the same thing

States and providers use several delivery categories: classroom, synchronous distance learning (live online), asynchronous or self-paced distance learning, and correspondence. Attendance and identity rules differ. Effective July 1, 2026, North Carolina’s synchronous-distance rule requires the student to remain visible on camera. Florida’s distance-course rules include end-of-course controls. California correspondence timing rules prevent students from compressing three 45-hour statutory courses into a weekend.

Before paying, ask whether sessions are live, whether camera attendance is mandatory, how missed time is made up, how the final is proctored, how many final-exam attempts are allowed, when the provider reports completion, and whether the course expires. “Study whenever you want” can still include a timed or proctored final.

The state exam is a different product

Do not infer the exam format from the course format. California DRE administers its own 150-question salesperson examination at DRE testing locations. New York schedules a 90-minute Department of State exam through eAccessNY. Texas, Florida, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina use Pearson VUE for their licensing programs; Illinois and Georgia use PSI. Available delivery options belong to the current state candidate handbook, not to the school’s checkout page.

Test-vendor policies change more often than statutory course hours. Check the live handbook when you receive authorization. If remote proctoring is offered, confirm that it is offered for your exact state and exam—not merely by the vendor for some other profession.

Fingerprints are rarely a laptop task

Electronic applications are common. Fingerprints still require your body. California residents visit a Live Scan provider; out-of-state applicants use a card process. Texas uses state-specific IdentoGO instructions. Florida uses an FDLE-approved LiveScan provider. Other states have different contractors or statutory exceptions. Fingerprints submitted for a teaching job, concealed-carry permit, or another real estate commission generally do not attach themselves to this application.

Broker activation may be online, but it is not automatic

Texas brokers can request sponsorship through TREC’s system. Florida brokers can activate a new sales associate through their account or the appropriate status form. New York’s principal broker authorizes the salesperson application in eAccessNY. California reports salesperson employment through DRE. North Carolina uses Commission affiliation procedures for provisional brokers and the BIC.

In each case, an electronic click represents a legal supervisory relationship. A course provider cannot activate you, and paying for an “all-inclusive online license package” does not supply a broker unless a separate brokerage agreement clearly says so.

How long does the online route take?

Online delivery removes commuting and may make scheduling easier; it does not erase seat-time, course pacing, regulator review, exam availability, background processing, or sponsorship. Texas still requires 180 qualifying hours. New York still requires 77. Florida still requires 63 and the course completion is valid for two years. California still requires three college-level courses of at least 45 hours each. North Carolina still requires 75 hours before the exam and 90 hours of postlicensing afterward.

Beware of a school promising a license in a number of days shorter than the state’s required education. It may be advertising access to course material, not legal completion, exam approval, or license issuance.

Before buying an online course

1. Open the regulator’s approved-course directory yourself.
2. Match the school, course title, approval number, delivery method, and license type.
3. Confirm what is included: required education, school final, exam prep, state-exam fee, fingerprints, and application are often separate.
4. Read refund and course-extension terms.
5. Ask when completion is reported and what proof you receive.
6. Check the state exam and fingerprint locations before assuming the entire process is remote.

The honest answer is: you can often study and file online, but the state still controls every gate. Use the relevant license guide to separate those gates before choosing a package.
